Established in the year 1968, the University of Calicut is one of the largest universities in the state of Kerala. The university has more than 395 colleges affiliated with the University of Calicut. Students have the choice of enrolling on bachelor, masters and doctorate courses. There are, in addition, short term courses such as certificates and diplomas in technical and job-based skills courses. It also has both full-time on-campus courses and distance mode courses, to suit the needs of all students.

History of University of Calicut: The University of Calicut came into being when certain visionaries released the shortcomings of the existing higher education system in the state. The goal was to build up a university where students from all over can come and gain a quality educational degree. After multiple discussion rounds and a visit from the UGC’s special commission, on July 23rd 1968, the university came into existence on paper. The university had humble beginnings with only a couple of buildings initially. Slowly over the years, more departments, courses and buildings were constructed. More and more colleges were under its affiliation too. In 1968, the total student count at the university and affiliated colleges were 44,000. This figure was 1.12 lakh in the year 1992 and there has been a steady growth in enrolment since then.

The University of Calicut is a highly ranked university in various private and public agency lists. First and foremost is the National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF from the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The agency releases ranking lists in various disciplines every year. The University of Calicut has ten departments or schools of education. Each department has various course levels and more concentrations to choose from. These departments are Languages, Bioscience, Social Sciences, Mathematics & Computational Sciences, Physical Sciences and Education. Further, there are the departments of Information and Communication Studies, Fine Arts, Business Studies and other departments. Specifically, all of the mentioned departments have more concentrations and sub concentrations that students can choose from for their degrees. In terms of degrees, the popular bachelor’s degrees available are BA, B.Com, B.Sc., BCA and also BBA. At the postgraduate level, students popularly choose between MA, MBA, M.Sc, M.Com and also MCA. For starters, the university has a computer centre hub that handles many services at the campus. All documents are digital at the campus and there is a high-speed internet connection at the campus and hostels too. The computer centre also has a central admission system for all courses.
Calicut University’s botanical garden is home to a variety of flora and fauna species. It was established in 1971 to preserve endangered varieties of flowers and more. Another more unique campus facility is the university museum that houses art from well-known artists. In 2005, the university also opened up the Madhava Observatory. The observatory, set up in association with the IIA, Bengaluru, is the largest of its kind at the university level for the Astrophysics department.
